The West Yorkshire Local Maternity and Neonatal System has produced a short video to explain what it means if your baby’s movement changes during pregnancy. This is available to view below and is also provided in several community languages.
Most women are first aware of their baby moving when they are 18 to 20 weeks pregnant and continue to feel them moving right up to and during labour. If you notice your baby has stopped moving, or is moving less, it may be a sign that your baby isn’t well.
When you start to feel your baby moving you will soon get to know what their regular patterns are, for example you may notice them more at certain times of the day. The movements might feel like a swish, a flutter, a kick, or a roll.
Every baby is different – there's no set number of movements you need to feel.
How and where you feel your baby’s movement can be affected by the position your baby is lying in, the way you might be sitting or standing, whether you are active or resting.
You will get to know how your baby moves day to day and what’s typical for them.
If you notice your baby has stopped moving, or is moving less, it may be a sign that your baby isn’t well. If you are worried about your baby's movements, call the Maternity Assessment Centre at your hospital.
