Covid-19 National Booking Service Changes in Two Weeks

Posted on: 30 November 2023

The NHS in West Yorkshire is urging people who are eligible for flu and COVID-19 vaccines this winter to book their appointments now, ahead of changes to the national booking system in two weeks.

After 14 December, people will no longer be able to book flu and COVID-19 vaccines online through the national booking system or on the NHS App

The 119 service, which provides booking support for those that can’t get online, will close for bookings on 14 December and for queries on 22 December.

Dr James Thomas, GP and Medical Director for NHS West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board, said: “I encourage everyone who is eligible to book their Covid-19 vaccination online through the National Booking System and the NHS app as soon as possible, as these are the quickest ways to arrange a vaccination.

“Getting vaccinated against flu and COVID-19 ahead of 15 December will help protect you and your loved ones ahead of the winter holidays and Christmas season. Viruses spread more easily when people gather indoors and it can take up to two weeks for your body to build up maximum defences.

“It’s particularly important that those most at risk of serious illness are protected – especially older people and those with underlying health conditions – both to reduce the chances of becoming seriously ill as well as reduce pressures on local NHS hospitals and staff. That’s why we’re urging everyone who is eligible to book their vaccines now.”

People will still be able to get a winter vaccination after 15 December but there may be fewer available appointments and people may have to travel further.

After 31 January, the COVID-19 vaccine offer will close. In most cases, people will have to wait until a future seasonal campaign. People will also be able to get a flu vaccination until 31 March 2024 through their GP or at a participating pharmacy.  Details of walk-in sites can be found at Find a NHS walk-in Covid-19 vaccination site

Online bookings will reopen next year, and the NHS will contact local people if their NHS record suggests that they may be eligible for a seasonal vaccine.
