Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations open to all eligible groups across West Yorkshire

Posted on: 1 October 2026

The NHS winter vaccination programme is stepping up across West Yorkshire today, with eligible people being encouraged to protect themselves and those around them.

The NHS will deliver thousands of free flu and COVID-19 vaccinations to adult cohorts ahead of the colder months.

From today, people can get the flu vaccine if they:

  • are aged 65 and over (including those who will be 65 by 31 March 2027)
  • are aged 18 to 64 and have certain long-term health conditions
  • live in a care home
  • are the main carer for an older or disabled person, or receive a carer's allowance
  • live with someone who has a weakened immune system
  • are experiencing homelessness or staying in a homeless hostel or night shelter

Frontline health and social care workers can also get a flu vaccine through their employer.

Flu vaccinations for children and pregnant women began  in September and from today children aged two and three, as well as children aged two to 18 in clinical risk groups, can also use participating community pharmacies.

The National Booking Service and NHS App are convenient ways of booking appointments. Alternatively, you can call 119 free of charge to book over the phone if you cannot book online.

Alongside flu, COVID-19 vaccinations are commencing for all eligible cohorts: residents in care homes for older adults; adults aged 75 and over (including those who will be 75 by 31 January 2027); and immunosuppressed people aged six months to 74 years.

People can book a COVID-19 vaccination appointment online, in the NHS App, or by calling 119 as well as getting vaccinated at:

  • a walk-in COVID-19 vaccination site
  • a local service, such as a community pharmacy or your GP surgery
  • your care home (if you live in a care home for older adults)

Dr James Thomas, GP and Medical Director, West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, said:

“Flu and COVID-19 cause serious illness and spread more easily during winter, when we spend more time indoors.

“Seasonal vaccinations reduce your risk of becoming seriously unwell and needing hospital treatment. They can also help protect those around you who may be particularly vulnerable.

“If you are eligible and have not yet booked an appointment, please do so as soon as you can. Vaccination takes only a few minutes and provides important protection throughout winter.”

Full details about winter vaccinations, eligibility and how to book are available on the NHS website.
