Information, resources and useful links

Back to the learning disabilities landing page

Sometimes people with a learning disability and autistic people don’t get the same good health care as everyone else. Sadly, the most recent LeDeR report (learning from lives and deaths of people with a learning disability and autistic people) shows that cancer is still a leading cause of people dying too young. Sometimes this can be successfully treated if caught early.

We want everyone to have good health so they can live well for longer. Thanks to support from West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, a group of people with learning disabilities, autistic people and health professionals from West Yorkshire have worked with Inclusion North to co-produce some Easy Read booklets and short videos.

We want to encourage people to check their own bodies, alongside going for annual health checks and cancer screenings.

Our guides are full of good advice for how we can take the lead in our own health care.

Here are our Easy Read booklets:

  • Live a long and strong life
  • Get to know your body
  • Going for a breast screening
  • Going for a cervical screening

West Yorkshire Children’s Additional Needs Network (WYCANN)

The Children’s Additional Needs Network started in 2016 with an ambition to improve communication between the various charities operating in the Leeds area in the field of supporting children with additional needs and their families. In 2019 Leeds CANN expanded to cover all of West Yorkshire, becoming the West Yorkshire Children’s Additional Needs Network (WYCANN). WYCANN now has 84 member organisations, including teams from Leeds City Council, Bradford MDC and Calderdale MBC responsible for Children’s and Family Services, and SEND, Councillors with the Children’s’ Services portfolio, and NHS teams with involvement in this area.

This flyer contains more information and as a first step towards membership, please contact Chris Eatwell, Chair of the Network, either on email chriseatwell@aol.com or mobile 07813 028 594.

Advanced care planning is something that everyone should consider as they age. Making clear plans helps families and carers to respect a person’s decisions about their health.

Discussions about ageing and dying can be difficult, but it happens to all of us and people with Learning Disabilities may find this information helpful and comforting.
