Digital innovation aids easier prescriptions in West Yorkshire

Posted on: 19 December 2023

From the 5 December, patients registered with a GP Surgery in West Yorkshire can view their confirmed prescriptions on the NHS App. This includes viewing confirmed acute and repeat prescriptions that have been authorised and collecting one-off prescriptions without the need for a paper copy.

For patients with a nominated pharmacy their prescription will automatically be sent and in most cases for repeat prescriptions they will have already been downloaded by the pharmacy in advance of the patient arriving.

Medical Director of the NHS Integrated Care Board in Leeds, and GP, Dr Sarah Forbes said:

“I would encourage all residents of Leeds to download the NHS app. Not only can you book appointments easily, view your health records, and organise flu and covid vaccination, from the 5 December you will now be able to view and obtain prescriptions digitally without the need for a paper copy.”

Patients without a nominated pharmacy will be able to obtain their prescription via the NHS App and view a prescription barcode. This barcode can be presented to a pharmacist on their mobile phone without having to collect a paper prescription from their GP. Pharmacies will be equipped with scanners to process the prescription.

Patients will be able to view the items prescribed and the professional who prescribed them.

This new feature will add to the functionality of the NHS App which already allows users to:

•                     Order repeat prescriptions and nominate a pharmacy where they would like to collect them

•                     Book, cancel or amend appointments with a range of professionals in their general practice team

•                     Book essential flu or covid vaccinations.

•                     View their GP health record including letters and test results

This initiative gives patients early visibility of exactly what their healthcare provider has prescribed for them, and what they will then collect or receive from pharmacies.
