Discontinuation of LevemirĀ® (insulin detemir)

Posted on: 8 June 2026

Levemir insulin graphic.jpgIf you use Levemir® insulin, you need a review and a prescription for an alternative insulin before supplies run out – which is expected in December 2026. This is a planned product discontinuation by the manufacturer of Levemir®; there are no safety concerns with Levemir®.

If you are under the care of a diabetes team (at a hospital, community clinic or at your GP practice) and already have a diabetes review appointment booked before the end of September 2026, your team will discuss switching you to another insulin at that appointment. If you do not have a review appointment booked and are still using Levemir® insulin, contact your diabetes team to arrange one.

If you are not under the care of a diabetes team in a hospital or community setting but your GP feels you would benefit from being seen by one of these specialist services, your GP practice will arrange a referral for you.

If you have a diabetes appointment soon, and Levemir® isn’t mentioned, please ask your diabetes team or GP about it. Information on which alternative insulins to start people on or switch people to has been shared with diabetes healthcare professionals across West Yorkshire.

Dr Waqas TahirEven if you have supplies of Levemir® at home, contacting your diabetes team or GP practice as soon as possible will allow time for you to be booked in for a review to switch your medication, and have any necessary follow-up appointments.

Dr Waqas Tahir, Clinical Diabetes Lead at West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership, said: “Alternatives are available, and your diabetes team or GP will help you switch to another insulin that’s right for you. Please make sure you have a review appointment booked before the end of September 2026 as this will ensure there’s enough time to change your treatment safely and smoothly.”

To help your diabetes team or GP at the time of your review appointment, it would be useful if you recorded your blood glucose readings for one or two weeks before your review. This will help shared decision making as to the best alternative insulin for you. You’ll find some guidance around recording your readings on our Medicines information page, along with some frequently asked questions.
