This week, we’ve been supporting Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week, a joint campaign from NHS England and Diabetes UK, which ran from 26 May to 1 June 2025. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with type 2 diabetes and encourage people to take steps to prevent it.
You can check your own risk using the Diabetes UK Know Your Risk tool at riskscore.diabetes.org.uk. If the tool shows you’re at moderate or high risk, you’ll be advised to contact your GP for a blood test. If your results indicate you’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, you may be referred to the free Healthier You NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme, which helps people reduce their risk through healthy eating, weight management, and increased physical activity.
Women with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM) can now self-refer to the programme – see the GDM section on the NDPP pages. The campaign also encourages healthcare professionals to refer eligible patients.
Type 2 diabetes is largely preventable. Simple lifestyle changes - like eating well, staying active, and maintaining a healthy weight - can make a significant difference.
Real stories from West Yorkshire highlight the impact of the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme:
- Group sessions helped Trevor reduce his risk of developing type 2 diabetes
- Laurence was referred to the programme after a routine blood test during an unrelated GP appointment showed pre-diabetic blood sugar levels
- Peter lost 10kg in nine months through his commitment to the programme, marking a major personal achievement
These success stories show how early action and support can lead to lasting, life-changing results. Let’s continue working together to raise awareness and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes in our communities.
