Help with NHS prescription costs
Some people must pay for medicines from the NHS. These are called prescriptions. Your health care professional gives you a prescription when you need medicine. You can find details of NHS prescription charges can be found on their webpage using this link). If you need lots of prescriptions, there are ways to save money.
Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC)
A PPC is a card you can buy. It helps you save money on NHS prescriptions.
You pay once, and then get your prescriptions free for a set amount of time. You will save money with a PPC if you get:
- More than three prescriptions in three months, or
- More than 11 prescriptions in 12 months

You can use this card for any NHS medicine.
Before you buy a PPC
Some people don’t have to pay for NHS prescriptions at all. This includes:
- some children
- people aged 60 or over
- people getting certain benefits
Some medicines are always free, like:
- birth control (contraceptives)
- medicines given to you in hospital.
