On this page, you can search for information about medicines and medical devices that are paid for by the NHS. Every medicine and medical device is put into a group depending on who is able to prescribe that medicine or medical device.
The groups are:
- Specialist recommendation
Can be prescribed by a GP following recommendation by a specialist. - Specialist initiation
Theses medicines and medical devices will have been given to a patient by a specialist in the first instance. They can then be prescribed by the patient’s GP going forward. - Amber
Medicines and medical devices in the Amber group are initiated by a specialist but the responsibility for prescribing can be moved to the patient’s GP if the GP agrees. - Red
Prescribing responsibility should remain with the specialist unless there are very exceptional circumstances. - Do not prescribe
These are medicines or medical devices that are not funded by the NHS in West Yorkshire. - Do not prescribe - not yet classified
Newly licensed medicines and medical devices are put in the ‘Do not prescribe - not yet classified’ group until they have been through the appropriate approval process. - Green
These medicines and medical devices are usually prescribed by GPs but can be prescribed by healthcare professionals in primary, secondary and specialised care settings. - Restricted
