March 2022
In 2020/21 the Improving Population Health Programme appointed two leadership fellows in support of our diverse leadership ambition as part of the Partnership’s The Fellowship. John was one of two aspirant directors whose local authority knowledge and background contributed immensely to better outcomes on work themes.
John continued with the programme as Acting Assistant Director until the end of March 2022. and took the lead on developing the anchor institutions work stream. An anchor institution is any organisation that plays a pivotal role in communities and are in a prime position to address the social or wider determinants of health - the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. John supported programme leads on our climate change and housing for health ambitions as well as economic recovery and innovative technology and how they relate to health inequalities.
John said: “As a leadership fellow, initially for 6 months, I quickly came to understand the absolute value of improving population health, the significant impact tackling health inequalities can bring and more importantly, the influence and respected reputation within the system - regionally and nationally of the programme.
"The team have been welcoming, are hardworking and making an impact on health outcomes in West Yorkshire. It was therefore a straightforward decision to continue my leadership programme with an extension to March 2022. I have had the opportunity to work at a senior level on key agenda items, collaborating with senior leaders, contributing to strategic decisions and taken on responsibility for key roles. I have no doubt that the programme is a key part of delivering learning and diverse leadership for the Partnership. It’s a privilege to be part of an achieving team.”
