Sue’s life was transformed overnight when she suffered a major stroke, leaving her with aphasia, and mobility challenges. Sue had gone to bed complaining of a headache, fatigue, and dizziness. A few hours later, she was found on the bed unresponsive. Sue was taken to hospital, where scans showed that she had suffered two major bleeds on the brain. The stroke left Sue with no function on her right-hand side and severely impaired speech.

An Aphasia Support speech and language therapist visited Sue and assessed her communication skills. Sue had acquired expressive aphasia following her stroke, which had impacted her speech, but she also had difficultly reading. Sue began one-to-one support with a volunteer with the aim of improving her understanding, communication, and general wellbeing.

All of Sue’s determination came to fruition one day, when she was watching the news and managed to ask her husband a question. Phrases are now coming back to Sue, and she is also able to read some words. Her husband states that Aphasia Support made an enormous difference to Sue’s rehabilitation and recovery, and helped to build her self-reliance, autonomy, and optimism.
