West Yorkshire and Harrogate Healthy Hearts initiative wins prestigious HSJ Value Award

Posted on: 4 September 2020

West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership (WY&H HCP) is delighted to announce that the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Healthy Hearts initiative has been awarded the ‘Cardiovascular Care Initiative of the Year’ at the HSJ Value Awards 2020.

The initiative, led by WY&H HCP,  delivered by Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network (Yorkshire and Humber AHSN), works with health and care professionals across the area including GPs, community pharmacists as well as voluntary organisations and community groups to join forces to better care for people with CVD.

This year’s judging process followed a different format due to the coronavirus pandemic. Finalists were asked to create a video presentation to submit for review by the judging panel, which is formed of a wide range of well-respected figures from across the UK healthcare community.

The West Yorkshire and Harrogate Healthy Hearts initiative has been awarded this prestigious award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to delivering better services and driving better outcomes across their organisation over the past 12 months.

On being awarded this accolade, Rob Webster, CEO Lead for WY&H HCP said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be named as winner of the ‘Cardiovascular Care Initiative of the Year’. The initiative has led to 10,000 additional people being added to hypertension registers so far. More than 17,500 additional people have had their blood pressure controlled to a tighter target (less than 140/90), with an estimated 350 people avoiding a heart attack or stroke over the next five years. As well as this, 2,500 people have had a medication review and over 2,000 people have been identified at risk of cardiovascular disease as their cholesterol is too high and been offered a statin. This alone means that nearly 500 people could avoid a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years across our area. This is a great, life-saving example of what can be achieved when partners come together’.

Helen Hirst, Chief Officer for Bradford District and Craven Clinical Commissioning Group said: ‘I’m thrilled to hear that WY&H HCP has been recognised by the HSJ for the Healthy Hearts Initiative and delighted that the success of the work started in Bradford. Being part of WY&H HCP means we can scale up initiatives, such as Healthy Hearts, across West Yorkshire and Harrogate, to deliver life-saving results. This is after all what WY&H HCP is all about, sharing learning, good practice and importantly helping more people to live a long and healthy life’.

Dr Steve Ollerton, clinical champion of the West Yorkshire and Harrogate Healthy Hearts initiative, said: ‘This award is testament to all the hard work of all our partners to help reduce cardiovascular disease across our region. We have known for some time this was a high priority for our patients. We have demonstrated that by working at scale using simplified processes you can make a huge impact on both our patients’ outcomes and help our clinicians work more efficiently. It’s a true win-win success. We are so pleased that this has been recognised with this award and would gladly share our learning with other regions’.

The editor of the Health Service Journal, Alastair McLellan, offered his congratulations to the teams on their success, ‘The entrants this year have been of incredible calibre, and each of the winners at the HSJ Value Awards 2020 have been chosen based on their outstanding commitment to delivering value and efficiency across their organisation, I’d like to offer my congratulations to West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership and Yorkshire and Humber AHSN on winning the ‘Cardiovascular Care Initiative of the Year’ at this year’s HSJ Value Awards’.

Congratulations also to Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who was highly commended in the ‘Cardiovascular Care Initiative of the Year’ as well for their Combined Heart Failure and Device Services.
