Partnership reminds everyone to ‘Know Your Numbers’ as part of blood pressure week

Posted on: 30 August 2023

West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership (WY HCP) are once again supporting the ‘Know Your Numbers’ week campaign, from 4-10 September. Led by Blood PressureMan having blood pressure checked by a healthcare professional UK, this year’s theme, ‘Make the time, ease your pressure’ aims to raise awareness of maintaining healthy blood pressure levels and preventing heart disease.

High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is a leading risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions. Despite this, many people are unaware of their blood pressure status and the potential health risks linked to uncontrolled hypertension.

‘Know Your Numbers’ week aims to bridge the knowledge gap by offering information and advice on home blood pressure monitoring, amongst other things.

WY HCP are working with a range of partners to spread the word, including Yorkshire and Humber Academic Health Science Network, Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust, The University of Huddersfield, and importantly people and communities most at risk.

Emily Turner, CVD Prevention Clinical Lead for WY HCP said: ‘Helping people to understand and control their blood pressure is one of the most important things we can do to support people to live longer, healthier lives. Encouraging people to ‘know their numbers’ is one simple way to improve the health of all who live in West Yorkshire’.

The campaign include a series of free blood pressure drop-in checking stations to support both staff and people living across the area. Including:

  • Leeds Market (food hall) on 4 September 10am-3pm.
  • White Rose Shopping Centre on 8 September 9.30am-2pm

Many community pharmacies also offer blood pressure checks. Another way to get blood pressure checks is for people to attend their NHS health check when invited.

Emily added: ‘Together, we can work towards reducing the prevalence of hypertension and its associated complications, ultimately leading to a healthier and happier life. For more information about the campaign and upcoming events, please visit Blood Pressure UK’.
